Audiologists conduct hearing evaluations and treat hearing loss, most commonly with hearing aids. Audiologists customize and optimize ear-related products as well as educate and counsel the product users. In the medical world, "audiology" is a subspecialty of "ear, nose and throat." Some audiologists practice independently and some are members of an ENT practice.
“ENT” is easier to pronounce and recall than “otorhinolaryngology” but refers to the same medical umbrella that includes hearing, balance, speech, sinus, swallowing and head and neck disorders. An ENT doctor is a head and neck surgeon who has been to medical school. The subspecialties of any given ENT medical practice vary, however, almost always include audiology and an audiologist.
At any given time, the latest and greatest hearing aid technology is differs. Hearing aid manufacturers leap frog each other with new and better features. The “best hearing aids” in the hands of an audiologist who does not know or care how to optimize them for a particular person is not ideal. Different people require different hearing aid features and specifications.
New hearing aid features you may not be aware of are, 1) charging docks that are a convenient "re-charging" alternative to fumbling around with tiny hearing aid batteries, 2) bluetooth streaming to smartphones that turns hearing aids into ear pieces for phone calls and music streaming.
